In my opinion, i had used the HTC Wildfire and also own an LG Optimus one.
LG Optimus One is a better choice for the price. As far as updates go, LG will release an update to anrdoid 2.3 Gingerbread later this year which is already confirmed on the US website. And the CPU is not slow, it is faster than wildfire, tha lagging can be fixed easily by rooting and installing another kernel + ROM, community support is very good. If you dont want to root, you can always wait for the 2.3 update. The resolution is also way better. The 3 MP camera is more than enough though i miss an LED flash and a dedicated camera button. Its always down to personal preference, but having used both devices and comparing the price, LG is the one for me.
you just explained it nicely !
